A major change from the novel to the movie, The Outsiders, was eye color. Eye color was a notorious part of the novel yet was not mentioned in the movie. In fact, only about 2 character’s eyes in the movie were like the one in the book. This is strange since it showed Pony’s emotion of how he feels about a certain person through their eyes. If he saw them as cold, he described it as, “...eyes that are like two pieces of pale blue-green ice,”. If they were important, he mentioned their eyes, this is shown as his relationship with Cherry grows and he says, “She had green eyes,”. While it is understandable why this scene was removed, not even a line was mentioned towards something that held up the plot.
A part in the novel that was not mentioned, if not briefly, was what led to the Church fire. It was because of the movie that we now see a bigger picture of what happened. Despite the text saying, “We must have dropped a lighted cigarette or something.” it shows a possibility but unsureness. The film shows Johnny dropping a cigarette, implying that is what started the fire. This is especially so since the fire happened only shortly after the lit cigarette was dropped.
A big part that was put into detail in both the novel and the film, was when the greasers won the rumble against the socs. The book puts this big event, the rumble, into detail and the movie depicts greatly as well. It begins with the Socs and Greasers meeting up and displays a silence between Darry and Paul, old college buddies, until Darry takes a hit and the rumble is on. In the movie, it is extremely dramatic and uses different effects to show the intenseness, like darkness, mud, and various number of other things. While the movie put this scene into detail, both the movie and novel did a great job reeling the reader in with this scene.

Johnny stands firm for what is correct when he spares Ponyboy from suffocating and when he keeps running into a building that is on fire to spare blameless kids. Darry additionally battles for what he believes is right. He does not head off to college and attempts to keep his family together.
